Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Bear Chiropractic Care uses electrical muscle stimulation to treat injuries that affect the muscles in order to shorten healing time. Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), or muscle stim, is a Chiropractic Therapy normally used on a patient who has a lot of pain or spasm in the area of injury or complaint. When Electrical Muscle Stimulation is performed, mild electrical current is applied to cause fast contraction to the muscles. Electrical Muscle Stimulation, often referred to as “muscle stim”, is a the therapy that involves a low level of electrical impulses delivered to the injured area to help reduce pain, spasms, and improve healing.

The fast contractions of the muscle experienced during this Chiropractic Therapy help to fatigue the muscle and allow it to relax, calming the spasm. The fast contractions also cause the body to release endorphins. The endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers, and so they help to reduce pain sensation to the area.

Often described by patients as a pleasant, “tingling” sensation, or “electrical massage” these impulses stimulate the body to release natural pain relievers, called endorphins. These endorphins reduce pain and inflammation, thereby promoting faster healing of the injured tissues. This therapy is often used to treat acute or chronic pain, as well as strains or sprains of the muscles, joints, and soft tissues of the spine and extremities.

Pain Relief via Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Electrical Muscle Stimulation helps relieve symptoms such as: headaches, shoulder pain, neck pain, back pain, as well as pain in the extremities. The therapy works by stimulating the muscles with a mild electrical current.  Electrodes are first placed at the appropriate points on the patient’s skin. We begin the therapy with a low setting and increase the frequency until the patient has reached their comfort level with the electrodes. Then the patient is allowed to be in this relaxing therapeutic state for 10 minutes or longer, depending on what Dr. Alexander Bohatiuk prescribes. Ice packs are also placed over the electrodes to further ease the pain and reduce the swelling. After several visits, the inflammation in your muscles and nerves will be gone altogether or significantly reduced.
